Painted in oil in 1884, this landscape by Frederic Edwin Church shows Chimborazo, the mountain named in the title, together with ruins that share the view. It sits between a landscape and an architectural view, so the mountain and the remains of human building are brought into one scene. Church was a leading figure of the Hudson River School and was known for realistic detail, dramatic light and wide, panoramic views. The original belongs to the Yale University Art Gallery.
On your wall: Its mountain landscape suits a study, library, sitting room or hallway, where a calm, expansive view can be enjoyed at length.
