Thomas Moran painted this view in 1873, and it shows Tucupit Point in the Kolob Canyons, part of what is now Zion National Park. The title points to a butte, and the work centres on the rise of the mountain landscape. Moran worked in watercolour, gouache and graphite on wove paper, a combination that allows both fine, pencilled detail and areas of soft, opaque colour. He was an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School, and his work often turned to the mountains of the American West. This watercolour is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: A fitting choice for a study, living room or hallway where a quiet, open landscape of rock and mountain would add depth and a sense of space.
