Frederic Edwin Church, 1859
Snow-capped peaks, a waterfall and a river gather in one vast South American landscape, painted with close attention to detail.

Frederic Edwin Church painted this oil-on-canvas landscape in 1859, drawing on his travels in the South American Andes. It is an idealised view rather than a single recorded spot, bringing together snow, forest, trees, a waterfall and a river. The painting is large, standing more than five feet high and almost ten feet wide. When it was shown in New York City in 1859 it caused a sensation and established Church as the foremost landscape painter in the United States. Today it belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its layered greens, water and snowy peaks suit a spacious living room, a study or a hallway where the eye can wander into the distance.
