Paul Guigou painted this rocky stretch of the Mediterranean coast in oil on a wooden panel, around 1865. Clear, intense light floods over the stony cliffs and the sparse greenery, which seems baked by the heat of the sun. The work reflects the naturalist aim of recording exact details and atmospheric effects observed directly from life. Guigou studied art in Marseilles and devoted most of his career to views of his native Provence. From 1855 he travelled back and forth between Marseilles and Paris, where he came to know the paintings of Gustave Courbet. He died of a stroke at the age of 37.
On your wall: Its sunlit, warm-toned coastal scene would bring a feeling of southern heat and open air to a living room, hallway, study or dining space.

Paul Camille Guigou was a French landscape painter. Landscape was the subject of his work, and it is where his name belongs. For anyone drawn to scenes of the natural world, his paintings offer a quiet way to bring the French countryside into a room.
