Aivazovsky's Odessa is an oil painting of the Black Sea port, a city view in which the coast and the harbour shape the scene. Sailing ships, a subject he returned to often, share the water with the town, and the Potemkin Stairs are associated with the work. It belongs to his output of the 1840s, when he painted cityscapes and seacoasts, and it is now in Moscow. It sits comfortably among his Ukrainian subjects and harbour scenes, and suits anyone who enjoys the meeting of city, ships and sea.
On your wall: Its harbour subject and maritime feel suit a study, hallway, living room or dining room, especially where a calm coastal note is wanted.
