John Linnell, 1848

Painted in oil on canvas in 1848, this work shows Noah on the eve of the Deluge. John Linnell approached religious subjects in a modern way, joining the biblical story with lines from Milton's Paradise Lost and careful observation of the English landscape. His colours are hotly toned. A newly wealthy industrialist bought the painting for £1,000 before it was even finished. By 1913 tastes had shifted, and it sold at auction for just £130, as Victorian painting fell from favour with collectors. Linnell was also known for supporting the elderly and destitute William Blake.
On your wall: Its warm, glowing landscape colours and dramatic scene suit a study, library, or sitting room where a thoughtful, narrative piece can hold the wall.
