Painted in oil on canvas in 1858, this work shows a stormy sea along a rocky coast. Sailing ships struggle in the rough water, and in a rowing boat close by are figures wearing turbans, which fits the Turkish coast of the title. Aivazovsky, a Russian Romantic painter born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, is widely regarded as one of the great masters of marine art. Here the drama of the weather and the vulnerability of the vessels take centre stage.
On your wall: Its stormy sea and rugged coastline suit a study, library or living room, where the drama of the scene can hold a wall with plenty of space around it.
