Ivan Aivazovsky painted The Ninth Wave in 1850, in oil on canvas. It shows a stormy sea at sunrise, with great waves rolling in under heavy cloud. The survivors of a shipwreck cling to a raft, and the morning light gives the scene its drama. It is regarded as the painter's best-known work, and it now hangs in the Russian Museum. Aivazovsky was a Romantic painter, born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia, and he is celebrated for his seascapes.
On your wall: Its dramatic sea and sunrise light give presence to a living room, study or hallway, especially where there is wall space to let the scene breathe.
