Ferdinand Hodler painted this mountain landscape in 1882. Its title points to the Fer-à-Cheval near Sixt, a horseshoe-shaped rocky cirque in the French Alps in Haute-Savoie. This is the setting of the Cirque du Bout du Monde, where the Giffre flows and waterfalls fall from the heights. Hodler, a Swiss painter, was working in a realistic style at this stage of his career, and the picture belongs with his landscapes of the 1880s. It offers a quiet, grounded view of alpine scenery.
On your wall: Its alpine subject suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a calm, natural note is welcome alongside wood, stone or muted furnishings.

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
