Ferdinand Hodler painted this view of the Silvaplanersee in autumn in 1907, working in oil on canvas. The title tells us the subject: a lake, seen in the season when the landscape changes its colours. Hodler, a Swiss painter, is among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, and later developed a personal Symbolism that he called "parallelism". Today this painting belongs to the Kunsthaus Zürich, where it can be seen in the collection.
On your wall: An autumn lake scene like this suits living rooms, studies and quiet hallways, where a calm landscape can bring a sense of the seasons indoors.

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
