About this artwork

Painted in 1891, Midday in the Alps belongs to the pastoral tradition, and its title places us in the mountains at the brightest hour of the day. It is an oil painting on canvas by Giovanni Segantini, an artist best known for his large landscapes of the Alps. Segantini worked first in Italy and then in Switzerland, and in his later years he combined a Divisionist style with Symbolist images of nature. The painting is held today in the Segantini Museum, which also cares for a number of his other works.

On your wall: Its Alpine subject and midday light suit a calm living room, a study or a hallway, especially where you want a quiet sense of open mountain air.
