About this artwork

Here a striking cloud is lit by the setting sun, and a pair of cypress trees ties the garden below to the bright sky above. Henri-Edmond Cross painted it around 1896 in oil, using the Pointillist approach: small dots and dashes of complementary colours that blend in the viewer's eye, giving an intense sense of colour and light. He had moved to the Mediterranean coast in 1891, settling in the seaside village of Saint-Clair, where the gentler climate eased his rheumatism. He wrote to his mother of the blue hills in the distance and of having just discovered happiness.

On your wall: Its luminous sky and garden scene would bring warmth and colour to a living room, a calm bedroom or a bright hallway.
