Henri-Edmond Cross painted this view of the beach at Saint-Clair in 1896. He signed it and dated it '96 in the lower left corner. It is an oil painting on canvas, measuring 54.5 by 65.4 centimetres. Saint-Clair lies at Le Lavandou, in the Var department on the French coast, and the work belongs to Cross's pointillist landscapes, built from small dabs of colour rather than blended brushwork. Cross is best known as a leading figure of Neo-Impressionism, and his approach to colour later influenced Henri Matisse.
On your wall: Its coastal subject and luminous colour suit living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and would bring a calm, airy feeling to a bright study or dining area.
