Henri-Edmond Cross, c. 1906
A sunlit clearing in Provence, where twisting trunks of blue and orange stand against glowing yellow foliage.

This small study from around 1906 shows a woodland clearing in Provence in full sunlight. Henri-Edmond Cross paints the trunks as twisting forms in blue and orange, set beneath yellow foliage, so the whole scene seems to glow. It is made in oil on paper and belongs to his Neo-Impressionist approach, in which colour is built up from distinct touches of paint. The signature sits at the lower right. Rather than a detailed portrait of a place, it feels like an immediate response to light and colour among the trees.
On your wall: Its warm yellows, oranges and cool blues would bring light to a living room, hallway or dining space, and sit well beside natural wood and neutral walls.

Henri-Edmond Cross, born Henri-Edmond-Joseph Delacroix, was a French painter and printmaker. He is especially well regarded as a leading figure of Neo-Impressionism, and he helped shape the movement's second phase. His work influenced Henri Matisse and many other artists, and it played a key part in the development of Fauvism.
