In 1903 Henri-Edmond Cross painted this view of the Giudecca, the Venetian island and its waterfront. It is a watercolour, a medium that suits the play of light and water so closely tied to the city. Cross was a French painter, best known as a leading figure in Neo-Impressionism, and his work influenced Henri Matisse and fed into the development of Fauvism. This Venetian scene is one of several he made of the city, and it now belongs to the Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its gentle watercolour handling and Venetian subject suit a living room, study or hallway where a quiet view of water and city is welcome.
