Painted in 1890, Roses is a still life in oil on canvas, and its subject is exactly what the title promises: roses. Van Gogh turned often to still lifes, as well as landscapes and portraits, and he worked in oil with bold colour and expressive brushwork. He made most of his paintings in the last two years of his life, and this one dates from that final year. The work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: A painting of roses suits living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and dining areas where you want a natural, flowery note on the wall.
