A night sky above Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, with a moon, stars and dark cypress trees, seen just before sunrise.

Van Gogh painted this in oil on canvas in June 1889. It shows the view from the east-facing window of his room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise. The sky, the moon and the stars fill the scene, and cypress trees rise in the foreground. The village below was not part of the real view: he added it from imagination. The painting has belonged to the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941, acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest, and it is among the most recognisable paintings in Western art.
On your wall: Its deep night tones and the glow of moon and stars suit a living room, study or bedroom, particularly where a calm, contemplative mood is wanted.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
