About this artwork

Painted by Claude Monet in 1902, this oil painting looks across the water to the arches of Waterloo Bridge. The surface of the river ripples beneath them, and further back the blue shapes of factory chimneys soften into haze. The title points to an early, misty hour, and the whole scene is held in that gentle, diffused light. It is a good example of the Impressionist approach Monet helped to establish, in which the aim is to convey how a scene is perceived rather than to describe every detail. Monet signed and dated it in the lower right corner.

On your wall: Its soft blues and misty atmosphere suit calm spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, studies and hallways, especially where a quiet, airy mood is wanted.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
