About this artwork

Painted in 1876 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, this oil on canvas shows an afternoon dance at Le Moulin de la Galette on a Sunday. Dancers and onlookers fill the scene, some moving to the music and others sitting and talking. It belongs to genre art, which turns everyday social life into its subject. Renoir was a leading French Impressionist, and here the focus falls on a gathering of people rather than a single figure. The painting is held in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

On your wall: Its sociable subject and lively crowd suit dining rooms, living rooms and hallways, where a sense of company and conversation is welcome.

About Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
