Renoir painted seven roses here, using a palette that moves from several reds through pinks to warm whites and soft yellows. He found flowers a restful subject. Unlike working with a model, they let him lay down tones and try out values boldly, without worrying about spoiling a canvas. Roses were a particular favourite of his, and he likened their full, rounded forms to the female body. The influence of Claude Monet, whom Renoir met in 1861 and later shared a studio with, can be seen in the rapid brushwork, the thinly scuffed background and the built-up paint, or impasto, in the blooms. The work is oil on fabric, dated to around 1890.
On your wall: Its warm reds, pinks and creamy whites suit a dining room, living room or bedroom, and bring a soft, floral note to a hallway or reading corner.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
