About this artwork

Seurat's painting shows people of every age and social class on the banks of the River Seine. Up close, the figures and forms break into dots and dashes of complementary colours set side by side, the hallmark of his pointillist technique. Many smaller painted and drawn sketches, along with several larger canvases, prepared the ground for the finished scene. Two years after beginning, Seurat returned to it, strengthening the silhouettes of some figures and adding others. The monkey on a leash feels essential to the whole, while the man with a rolled newspaper in the far distance is barely noticeable. Seurat wanted a picture of modern life to stand beside a classical Greek frieze.

On your wall: Its calm riverside scene and finely worked colour suit a living room, study or dining room where there is wall space to enjoy it from both near and far.

About Georges Seurat

Georges Pierre Seurat was a French post-Impressionist artist. He is remembered for devising chromoluminarism and pointillism, painting approaches built on the careful handling of colour and light. He also made drawings in conté crayon on rough-surfaced paper, a medium that suited his interest in tone and texture.
