Alfred Sisley, 1885
A quiet canal at Saint-Mammès, where soft, flickering brushwork turns water and foliage into a shimmer of outdoor light.

Sisley painted this view of the Loing canal at Saint-Mammès, a small town about forty miles south of Paris where the Seine and the Loing meet a canal. He was fond of the area and returned to paint there often during the 1880s. Money was tight for him in those years, and the low rents were an attraction. Here he works in a classic Impressionist manner, setting down pure colour in soft, flickering strokes. Forms dissolve into a haze of optical sensations, which suggests the brilliance of light out of doors. The painting is oil on fabric and dates from 1885.
On your wall: Its gentle, light-filled waterside scene suits living rooms, studies and hallways, and sits comfortably in calm interiors that welcome a view of the outdoors.

Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to British parents. He was especially devoted to painting outdoors, and almost all his work is landscape. He is known for series made around Hampton Court on the Thames, the 1875 floods at Marly-le-Roi, and the Gothic church at Moret-sur-Loing, as well as Seine riverside scenes west of Paris.
