Jongkind was born and trained in Holland, yet spent much of his life painting outdoors in France. Here he shows Bas-Meudon, near Paris, using small patches of bright colour to suggest the strength of open-air light. His oil paintings were usually finished in the studio from sketches made outdoors, but they still have a convincing sense of immediacy. That quality greatly impressed the young Claude Monet, who met Jongkind in the early 1860s and spent part of a summer painting with him on the Normandy coast. Monet later said that from then on Jongkind was his real master, and that he owed to him the final education of his eye.
On your wall: With its bright, light-filled colour and a river view, it suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a calm, airy landscape is welcome.

Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He is best known for his marine landscapes, which he painted in a free, relaxed manner rather than a tightly controlled one. Because of this approach, he is often seen as a forerunner of impressionism, and his work offers a calm, open view of water and sky.
