Überschwemmung in Port Marly

Alfred Sisley, 1876

A flooded village street under a grey sky, where water has crept in around the inn, the boats and the trees. Sisley paints the stillness that follows.

About this artwork

Sisley's painting of 1876 shows a street at Port-Marly under floodwater. On the left stands the inn marked 'A St Nicolas', and boats sit on the water where the road would be. Trees rise from the flood, and a grey sky hangs over the whole scene. It is an oil painting on canvas, signed 'Sisley 76' in the lower part of the picture. Sisley was a landscape painter who favoured working outdoors, and this view of an everyday place changed by water shows that interest. The painting is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.

On your wall: Its soft greys and watery reflections suit a calm living room, a study or a hallway, particularly where a quiet landscape is wanted.

About Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to British parents. He was especially devoted to painting outdoors, and almost all his work is landscape. He is known for series made around Hampton Court on the Thames, the 1875 floods at Marly-le-Roi, and the Gothic church at Moret-sur-Loing, as well as Seine riverside scenes west of Paris.
