Gustave Courbet, 1863
A woman in black silk and lace, set against the gold and violet glow of sunset. Courbet painted her as he saw her, without flattery.

Gustave Courbet painted Madame Laure Borreau four times, and this 1863 oil painting is the last and the most fully developed of the portraits. She wears a black silk dress trimmed with lace and a matching hat, while soft gold and violet light from a sunset fills the background. Courbet was a Realist, committed to painting what he could see in the world around him, and he did not idealise his sitter. He kept her shadowed eyes and full neck, details that one critic of the day found offensive. Today they read as the honesty of a painter who trusted his own eyes.
On your wall: Its deep black and glowing gold and violet tones suit a study, library, dining room or quiet sitting room, especially where the walls are warm or richly coloured.

Gustave Courbet was a French painter who led the Realism movement in nineteenth-century France. He chose to paint only what he could actually see, turning away from academic convention and the Romanticism of the generation before him. His independence influenced later artists, including the Impressionists and Cubists, and he was willing to make bold social statements through his work.
