Alfred Sisley, 1874
A sandy riverside road, strollers and a rowing boat beneath a cloudy sky: Sisley's 1874 view of the way to Hampton Court.

Painted in oil on canvas in 1874, this landscape follows a sandy road beside the river. Strollers wander along it, and a red-brick house stands among the trees. Beyond the road, a lock or weir breaks the water, and a rowing boat rests on the river. Clouds fill the sky above. The brushwork is loose and the scene is drawn from everyday outdoor life, in the Impressionist manner. Sisley signed it in the corner, with the date '74. The painting is now in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
On your wall: Its soft greens, sandy tones and touches of brick red suit living rooms, hallways and studies where a calm, open landscape is welcome.

Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to British parents. He was especially devoted to painting outdoors, and almost all his work is landscape. He is known for series made around Hampton Court on the Thames, the 1875 floods at Marly-le-Roi, and the Gothic church at Moret-sur-Loing, as well as Seine riverside scenes west of Paris.
