About this artwork

Painted in 1878, this Impressionist cityscape shows the rue Montorgueil in Paris on the day of the celebration of 30 June. The street is busy with a crowd, and the French flag appears throughout the scene, giving the view a festive air. Monet worked in oil on canvas, and the subject is an everyday city street rather than a landscape. The painting is now held in the Musée d'Orsay.

On your wall: Its lively crowd and flags suit living rooms, dining areas, hallways and studies where a bright, energetic city scene can bring movement to the wall.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
