About this artwork

Monet painted this outdoor figure study in oil on canvas in 1886. A woman in a white dress holds a green parasol, her body turned towards the left, and she stands on a grassy slope against a cloudy blue sky. The picture is catalogued as a study of a figure outdoors, and the sitter is identified as Suzanne Hoschedé, a daughter of Hoschedé. Her clothing, including the dress and a straw hat, is part of what the painting depicts. It belongs to the Impressionist approach to painting figures in open air. The work is held at the Musée d'Orsay.

On your wall: Its fresh whites, greens and sky blues suit bright living rooms, calm bedrooms, hallways and reading corners where a light, airy outdoor scene is welcome.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
