Jacob van Hulsdonck, 1615
A laden table of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, set with Chinese porcelain and left as though the diners have only just stepped away.

Jacob van Hulsdonck, a Flemish painter, filled this still life with a colourful array of foods and tablewares, from a plain earthenware trencher to delicate Chinese porcelain, a costly luxury that international trade had made possible. To viewers in the seventeenth century, such abundance would have suggested a world without scarcity or hunger. Look closely and you will notice partly eaten food and an overturned glass, hinting that the diners have just left, with insects exploring what remains. It is painted in oil on panel, and the back of the panel was prepared with gesso. The work dates from around 1615 to 1620.
On your wall: Its colourful food and fine tableware suit a dining room or kitchen, and would bring a rich, convivial note to a hallway or a dining nook.
