About this artwork

This painting shows Monet's first wife, Camille, outdoors on a snowy day, passing the French doors of their home at Argenteuil. The handling is strikingly free for its time. Her face is built from small daubs of paint, applied quickly, while the snow and trees are described in broad, broken strokes of pure white and green. It is oil on fabric, dated to around 1868–73, and it shows how readily Monet let loose brushwork carry a figure, a season and a moment.

On your wall: Its cool whites and greens and its quiet winter scene suit a calm living room, hallway or study, especially where you want a soft, wintry note.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
