About this artwork

Monet's painting shows a view at Sainte-Adresse, with a woman in the scene and sailboats on the water, along with the flag of France. The subject touches on a regatta, so the sea is part of the picture as much as the garden. It is painted in oil on canvas and belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which acquired it after a Christie's auction in December 1967 under the French title La terrasse à Sainte-Adresse. In 1879 it was shown at the fourth Impressionist exhibition in Paris, listed as Jardin à Sainte-Adresse.

On your wall: Its garden and seaside subject suits a bright living room, a dining area or a hallway where a view of boats and open water is welcome.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
