About this artwork

Cezanne built this 1890 oil painting in three horizontal layers. Azure sky sits at the top, the luminous white of the tower and farmyard buildings fills the middle, and burnt-orange earth runs across the foreground, a colour that recalls the iron-rich soil of Provence. Shimmering green cypress and olive trees, which he favoured, are placed among the buildings. Everything is pared back to essentials, with no unnecessary detail. It reflects his wish to make something solid and lasting, like the art in museums.

On your wall: Its calm bands of blue, white, orange and green suit bright living rooms, studies and hallways, and sit well alongside natural materials and warm, earthy tones.

About Paul Cezanne

Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter. His work brought new ways of representing what the eye sees, and it influenced avant-garde movements in the early twentieth century. He is often seen as a bridge between the Impressionism of the late nineteenth century and the Cubism that followed it.
