Paul Cezanne, 1904
Cézanne returns to the mountain near his home, with a pine branch sweeping across the sky to echo the slope of the peak.

In his last twenty years, Cézanne painted Mount Sainte-Victoire again and again, close to his home in Aix-en-Provence. Here he worked from life at one of his favourite spots, a small road leading east from Aix towards the mountain. He set up his easel at the roadside, with umbrella pines nearby and the mountain rising above the scene. A pine branch reaches in from the left across the sky, repeating the line of the mountain's slope and drawing the near and the far together. The work is oil on fabric, dated to around 1904.
On your wall: Its landscape subject suits living rooms, studies and quiet hallways, particularly where a calm view of the countryside would be welcome.

Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter. His work brought new ways of representing what the eye sees, and it influenced avant-garde movements in the early twentieth century. He is often seen as a bridge between the Impressionism of the late nineteenth century and the Cubism that followed it.
