This painting shows the valley of the Arc River, southeast of Cézanne's home in Aix-en-Provence. Although he exhibited twice with the Impressionists, Cézanne did not share his friends' aim of catching fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. He was more interested in balancing the forms and colours within a composition. Here he set strokes of different hues side by side, so that the leaves, the branches and the stream are described through colour rather than outlined. Painted in oil around 1895–1900, it asks the eye to move slowly across the surface.
On your wall: Its woodland and stream subject suits a living room, study or hallway where a calm, natural scene in layered colour would be welcome.

Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter. His work brought new ways of representing what the eye sees, and it influenced avant-garde movements in the early twentieth century. He is often seen as a bridge between the Impressionism of the late nineteenth century and the Cubism that followed it.
