About this artwork

Painted in 1873, this landscape shows the banks of the Seine near Bougival in autumn. Alfred Sisley made it in oil on canvas, and it is now in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Sisley was an Impressionist who devoted himself to landscape and was especially committed to painting outdoors. The Seine and the riverside settings west of Paris were a subject he returned to throughout his career. Here the season and the river are the focus, in a view that invites a slow, attentive look.

On your wall: The autumn river scene suits living rooms, studies and hallways, particularly where a calm, naturally inspired picture would sit well alongside warm wood or softer neutral tones.
