Painted in 1890, this oil on canvas is by Alfred Sisley, an Impressionist devoted almost entirely to landscape. The title places us in Moret, on the banks of the Loing, with an avenue of poplars as the subject. Sisley was known for working outdoors, and the setting here reflects his lasting interest in rivers and the countryside around them. Moret-sur-Loing was a place he returned to in his work, and this picture belongs among his paintings of the town and its river.
On your wall: A calm riverside landscape of trees and water, it would sit well in a living room, study or hallway where a natural, restful view is welcome.
