Monet painted this work in 1885, in oil on canvas. The title, Maisons au bord de la route, points to its subject: houses standing beside a road. It is the kind of ordinary scene that suited Monet, who sought to paint nature as he perceived it, a principle central to Impressionism, the movement he helped found. The painting is now in the High Museum of Art.
On your wall: A road-side scene of houses suits a living room, hallway or study, particularly where a calm, landscape-led picture is wanted.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
