Camille Pissarro, 1872
Rushing water and a heavy sky meet at a river lock near Pissarro's home, caught in quick, broken touches of colour.

Pissarro shows a river lock near his home at Pontoise, a rural commune about 17 miles northwest of Paris. The water rushes past beneath an overcast sky, and both are built from rapid, broken brushstrokes of pure colour. He painted straight onto the canvas without a preliminary drawing, and may well have finished the work in a single session. This was part of the new Impressionist approach to painting quickly outdoors, which Pissarro helped to develop, aiming to capture fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. The shimmering surface gives the sense of natural daylight.
On your wall: Its moving water and soft, overcast light suit living rooms, studies and quiet hallways where a calm landscape with a sense of movement is welcome.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
