Camille Pissarro, 1879
A man dozes in dappled sunlight at the edge of the woods, painted in patient diagonal strokes that Pissarro compared to knitting.

Pissarro painted this large landscape in 1879, while living in the rural village of the Hermitage, near Pontoise, where he had settled in 1872. It shows a man asleep in the sun-dappled woods. He kept to pure colours and built the surface from regular diagonal brushstrokes, an effect he likened to knitting. At the time he was very short of money and finding it hard to sell his work. The painting, in oil on fabric, was shown at the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1879.
On your wall: Its dappled woodland scene and textured, gentle brushwork suit a living room, a reading corner or a quiet hallway, where it brings a calm, natural feel.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
