Gauguin painted this work in 1889 at Pont-Aven, in northwest France. It shows a nude figure throwing herself into the sea, an image that can be read as a modern European woman turning away from civilisation and giving way to her natural instincts. The lines are simplified and the colours heightened, especially the contrast of green against orange, so the scene feels invented rather than observed from life. Gauguin showed the painting at the Café Volpini in Paris that same year, an exhibition that helped establish him as a leading figure of the Symbolist movement. It is an oil painting on canvas.
On your wall: Its strong green and orange contrast and the energy of the sea scene suit a living room, study or hallway where a confident splash of colour is welcome.

Paul Gauguin was a French painter who also worked as a sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer. His art is linked with Post-Impressionism and Symbolism, and he was an influential maker of woodcuts and wood engravings. Only moderately successful in his lifetime, he is now valued for his experimental use of colour and his Synthetist style, which set him apart from Impressionism.
