Paul Gauguin, 1891
Painted in 1891, soon after Gauguin reached Tahiti, this is among the first works he finished on the island: rich in colour and quietly mysterious.

Gauguin painted The Large Tree in oil on canvas in 1891, the year he left behind his family and his career as a stockbroker and sailed for Tahiti. He had grown disillusioned with the materialism of European society, and this is one of the first paintings he completed on the island. Its rich colours and stylised figures were meant to feel both symbolic and mysterious, suggesting private thoughts and emotions rather than a literal scene. Gauguin himself described seeking 'symphonies' and harmonies that do not represent anything real in the strict sense. The painting is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its rich colours suit living rooms, studies and reading corners where a thoughtful, contemplative picture can set the mood and reward a longer look.

Paul Gauguin was a French painter who also worked as a sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer. His art is linked with Post-Impressionism and Symbolism, and he was an influential maker of woodcuts and wood engravings. Only moderately successful in his lifetime, he is now valued for his experimental use of colour and his Synthetist style, which set him apart from Impressionism.
