Van Gogh painted Irises in oil on canvas in 1889. It shows irises growing in soil, and the composition is cropped so that the flowers press right up to the edges of the picture. He made it at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in France, where he produced a great many paintings during the last year before his death in 1890. The work is often described as Post-Impressionist. Since 1990 it has belonged to the permanent collection of the Getty in Los Angeles, California.
On your wall: With its garden subject, Irises suits living rooms, hallways and reading corners where you would like a touch of the natural world.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
