Maxime Maufra, 1895
A steep cliff frames the left of this Breton seascape, where the coast is built from flat planes of bold colour.

Maxime Maufra painted this view of the Breton coast in 1895, in oil. He began as an amateur and in 1883 left a career in business to paint full time, travelling through Normandy and Brittany to paint sea and landscapes. A visit to Pont-Aven in 1890 brought him into contact with Paul Gauguin and a group of younger artists drawn to Gauguin's approach to colour and composition. You can see that influence here, as forms become flat areas of strong colour arranged in a decorative pattern. The most striking choice is the steep cliff at the left, which frames the whole scene.
On your wall: Its coastal subject and bold, decorative colour suit a living room, hallway or study, particularly where a view of the sea would be welcome.
