About this artwork

John Singer Sargent painted this view in watercolour in 1910, at the Villa di Marlia near Lucca in Italy. A stone balustrade runs across the scene, topped with planters in terracotta and white. Behind it rises a mass of dark green garden foliage, which sets off the pale stone and the warmer tones of the pots. The artist's signature sits at the lower right. The work belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among a group of Sargent's watercolours held there.

On your wall: Its cool greens, pale stone and touches of terracotta suit a calm living room, a hallway or a study, especially where natural light and a garden outlook are already part of the room.
