John Singer Sargent painted this view of the Patio de los Leones, the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra, in 1879. The title places us in this well-known courtyard, and the work is now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Sargent was an American artist who travelled widely, and Spain was one of the many places his work took him. Here, an architectural setting becomes the subject, which suits an artist who was equally at home with portraits, landscapes and travel scenes.
On your wall: Its architectural subject suits a study, hallway or living room, particularly where travel, history or a calm, considered atmosphere is welcome.

John Singer Sargent was an American artist who lived abroad and became regarded as the leading portrait painter of his generation. His portraits evoke the luxury of the Belle Époque and Edwardian era. He also painted roughly 900 oils and over 2,000 watercolours, recording travels from Venice and Corfu to Spain, Montana and Florida.
