Painted in 1885, this is an oil on canvas by John Singer Sargent, an American artist working in the Impressionist manner. The scene is set in a wheat field near the village of Broadway, in Worcestershire, and the title tells us the reapers have stopped to rest. The picture is a landscape with figures, and a tree also appears among its subjects. It belongs to the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
On your wall: Its rural subject and open field setting suit living rooms, dining rooms and studies, particularly where a calm, naturalistic picture is wanted.

His portraits evoke the luxury of the Belle Époque and Edwardian era. He also painted roughly 900 oils and over 2,000 watercolours, recording travels from Venice and Corfu to Spain, Montana and Florida.
