This is a watercolour by John Singer Sargent, made in 1918. It shows a field in France with camouflage as its subject, so the scene is a rural one marked by the practice of concealment. Sargent is best known for portraits, but he also produced a great many watercolours, and this work belongs to that body of work. It is held today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its landscape subject and watercolour handling suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly where a quiet, thoughtful piece is wanted.

John Singer Sargent was an American artist who lived abroad and became regarded as the leading portrait painter of his generation. His portraits evoke the luxury of the Belle Époque and Edwardian era. He also painted roughly 900 oils and over 2,000 watercolours, recording travels from Venice and Corfu to Spain, Montana and Florida.
