This is a sketch by John Singer Sargent, dated 1877, and the title tells us it was made in preparation for his "Oyster Gatherers of Cancale". It shows a girl on a beach, a subject drawn from the Breton coast, where the artist was working that year. Studies like this give a closer look at how a painter gathers ideas for a bigger composition, with the figure observed on its own before it finds a place in the finished scene. The work is now in the Terra Foundation for American Art.
On your wall: Its seaside subject suits a hallway, a living room or a bedroom, especially in calm interiors where a quiet coastal scene can sit comfortably.

His portraits evoke the luxury of the Belle Époque and Edwardian era. He also painted roughly 900 oils and over 2,000 watercolours, recording travels from Venice and Corfu to Spain, Montana and Florida.
