About this artwork

Signac painted this work in 1886, and its title places us at Les Andelys, at the spot known as Côte d'Aval. It is oil on canvas and belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago. Signac was a French painter who, with Georges Seurat, helped develop Pointillism, and he is counted among the Neo-Impressionists. The picture comes from the year 1886, when he was working within that circle of ideas.

On your wall: A landscape of this kind suits living rooms, studies and hallways, where a calm view of the French countryside can sit comfortably alongside natural materials and soft light.

About Paul Signac

Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
