This is a landscape painting by Paul Cézanne, dated 1895, showing the Bibémus quarry. It is painted in oil on canvas, and the subject is the rock and cut stone of the quarry itself rather than a wide, open view. Cézanne is often seen as a bridge between Impressionism and the art that followed, and a landscape like this invites you to look at how a place is built up from shape and colour. The work is now in the Barnes Foundation.
On your wall: Its quarry subject and earthy landscape character suit studies, living rooms and hallways, especially where a calm, thoughtful picture is wanted to anchor a wall.

Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter. His work brought new ways of representing the world on canvas, and it influenced the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. He is often seen as a bridge between the Impressionism of the late nineteenth century and the Cubism that followed it.
